TURKISH
LANGUAGE FOCUS AVAILABLE FOR STUDY IN CULTURES AND SOCIETIES GLAS STREAM

Why Turkish?
Turkish is spoken by over 100 million people globally and is the official language of the Republic of Türkiye and one of the two languages of the Republic of Cyprus. A sizeable Turkish diaspora has also established itself in many countries in Europe and elsewhere.
The Turkish language and Turkish culture shares its origins with other Turkic cultures of Central Asia. Through familiarising oneself with the language and culture of Türkiye, one also develops an understanding of the commonalities shared between the numerous Turkic-descended peoples around the world.
Furthermore, the Belt and Road Initiative is set to create numerous opportunities in Central Asia and Türkiye as new economic corridors are opened to interlink the economies of China, Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia.
The curriculum
Turkish can be studied as part of the Cultures and Societies stream of the GLAS major. GLAS majors that wish to specialise in Turkish must complete 24 credits of TURK courses, including 12 from introductory courses and 12 from advanced courses.
